News - Medicine contained impotency drug

Ingredients of drugs like Viagra have been found in medicines being sold in six Chinese herbal shops in NI.

Inspections carried out by the health department found five products containing Sildenafil, one of the main ingredients of Viagra.

The adulterated items had names like Dragon Power and King 100% Natural Male Tonic.

Dr Mike Mawhinney, who carried out the , said anyone concerned should contact their GP or pharmacist.

He said drugs like Viagra “should only be given on prescription”.

“The department would advise them to… bring the product along with them, explain that they have taken them, explain that they have learned that they may be adulterated,” he said.

“Their GP or pharmacist will know what to do.”

Traditional medicines have been used for centuries

Traditional medicines have been used for centuries

At the moment there is nothing to prevent anyone setting up a Chinese medicine shop, so reputable practitioners are calling for the profession to be regulated.

Dr Rifang How, a member of the British Register of Chinese Medicines, said that until there was regulation, patients should check that their practitioner is suitably qualified.

“For patients, it is very essential to go the qualified practitioner and after having a full , get the herbs or products from approved suppliers,” she said.

“Patients should be very confident with all the products they have got and confident with the service they have got.”

‘Element of emotion’

However, Dr Hugh McGavock, a pharmacologist, is against people taking any kind of herbal medicine.

“They are impure, they are unstandardised - you can’t be sure of the dosage from one batch to the next, they have multiple plant chemicals in them,” he said.

“They are not just pure, natural substances and they mostly have a very, very low…. effectiveness. So you are actually paying to get almost nothing.

“There is a huge element of emotion in this. It’s what doctors call the placebo effect. All medicines, if given with enough enthusiasm will do you good, even if there’s almost nothing in them.

“”My general advice would be if you want magic, go to a magician. If you want medicine go to a doctor or a pharmacist.”

BBC Northern Ireland health correspondent Dot Kirby said: “Chinese medicine has been around for 2,000 years.

“Now practitioners are tarnishing its reputation. The regulation of the components of herbal medicines is already tightening.

“Some hope that the regulation of the actual practitioners is not far behind.”

News - Scientists discover ’stroke gene’

A gene which may increase the risk of stroke has been uncovered by Iceland-based .

The discovery could prompt the discovery of drug treatments to help those at highest risk.

This protein it produces plays a role in the growth of blood vessels. but too much of it may increase stroke risk.

Writing in the journal Nature Genetics, the scientists said people with certain forms of a gene called PDE4D may be most at risk.

Proteins from a similar “family”, called phosphodiesterase (PDE), are linked to other illnesses, such as asthma, and even erectile dysfunction.

This suggests that it may be possible to develop a drug to block the effects of the gene - the breakthrough impotence drug Viagra already works by targeting another member of the PDE family.

Solveig and colleagues at a company called deCode Genetics in Reykjavik believe this gene is associated with an increased risk of stroke.

They carried out DNA tests on over 1,700 people in Iceland, half of whom had suffered strokes.

We propose that PDE4D is involved in the pathogenesis of stroke

Solveig Gretarsdottir,
deCode Genetics

The Icelandic population is generally regarded as the best testing ground for geneticists.

This is because the gene pool is relatively pure. Unlike most other countries, there has been little immigration since the first Vikings arrived almost 1,000 years ago.

Scientists working on this latest study say they have identified genetic between those people who have had strokes and those who have not.

These differences centre on the gene PDE4D, located on chromosome 5.

They have found that three different isoforms of the gene were expressed at lower levels in people who had strokes.

Isoforms are groups of proteins that are produced by a gene.

They also found different combinations of genes in regions of chromosome 5 flanking the PDE4D gene in people who had strokes.

It is already known that this gene provides the coding which enables a protein called a phosphodiesterase to work.

Stroke risk

But the Icelandic scientists believe that too much of it may increase the risks of atherosclerosis - furring up of the arteries.

This causes the arteries to narrow, which can trigger a stroke.

“We propose that PDE4D is involved in the pathogenesis of stroke, possibly through atherosclerosis, which is the primary pathological process underlying ischemic stroke,” the scientists said.

They believe that blocking the protein in people with these potentially problematic forms of the PDE4D gene could protect them against stroke.

There are already drugs available to do this. These so-called phosphodiesterase inhibitors are used to treat asthma, inflammation and erectile dysfunction, with Viagra probably the best known.

However, much further study is needed before these drugs could be used to treat people who may have a high risk of having a stroke.

Viagra, for one, has potentially serious side effects if taken by men with underlying health problems.

News - Viagra-for-votes lawmaker sacked

A member of the Brazilian Congress has been forced out of office after being found guilty of distributing Viagra tablets to buy voters’ loyalty.

Antonio Jose de Moraes Souza, who represented the state of Piaui, was stripped of his mandate by an electoral court and fined $7,000 (4,000).

The court heard that the anti-impotency drug and other medicines were handed out by a doctor at a political rally.

The doctor was wearing a T-shirt and cap bearing the name.

The court ordered the second-placed candidate, Themistocles Sampaio Pereira, to take Souza’s place in the lower house of Congress, the Chamber of Deputies.

Viagra seized

The charges came after police arrested the doctor, Araao Cruz Mendes, at a campaign rally in the north-eastern town of in August 2002.

They also seized 400 boxes of medicines, including Viagra, which the court heard were being on Souza’s behalf in exchange for promises of votes.

In the hearing at the Regional Electoral Court in Piaui state on Monday, Souza was found guilty by four votes to one of vote-buying.

A spokesman for Souza said he would appeal against the decision.

Correspondents say vote-buying remains common in the impoverished north-eastern region of Brazil.

have been known to offer inducements ranging from food to minor medical procedures to gain voters’ support.

News - Sight warning on impotency drugs

Impotency drugs such as Viagra and Cialis may be associated with increased risk of damage to the optic nerve in some men, research suggests.

US found an increased risk in men with a history of heart attack or high blood pressure.

The University of Alabama team said healthcare professionals should warn patients of the potential risk.

The British Journal of Ophthalmology study follows several reports linking the drugs to eyesight problems.

NAION
A common cause of sudden vision loss in people over 50
Caused by a blockage of the tiny ciliary arteries supplying blood to the anterior optic nerve
There is no direct treatment, although corticosteroids are sometimes used to reduce swelling in the optic nerve

The findings are based on 76 men attending one US specialist eye clinic.

Half the men had optic nerve damage, diagnosed as anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), the rest were free of the problem.

All the patients were asked about their lifestyle, including smoking and alcohol intake, whether they had been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure and prescribed treatment for these conditions.

They were also asked if they had been prescribed Viagra and Cialis for erectile difficulties.

Men with optic nerve damage were no more likely to have taken the impotency drugs than men in the comparison group.

But men who had had a heart attack were 10 times more likely to have optic nerve damage if they had taken Viagra or Cialis before their diagnosis.

Men with high blood pressure were also more likely to have optic nerve damage if they had taken these drugs, although this was not significant.

Blood flow

The authors caution that their study is small, but suggest that the drugs may reduce the blood flow to the anterior optic nerve, resulting in tissue damage.

They believe the drugs may heighten the risk of NAION in those with vascular disease, who are already more .

The researchers urge any patient who has endured a sudden severe loss of vision, and has been prescribed Viagra or Cialis, to contact a doctor.

Writing in the journal, they said: “Though NAION is a rare condition, the large number of men using Viagra or Cialis suggests that, should an association truly exist, the incidence of NAION could rise dramatically.”

An editorial in the same journal points out that some patients with impaired eyesight as a result of NAION have reportedly decided to sue Pfizer, the manufacturers of Viagra.

However, Pfizer has said there were no reports of NAION in the trials of the drug carried out before it was licensed.

The company also argued that a greater number of cases related to this type of drug would have been reported by now if the association was anything other than coincidental.

Lilly ICOS, which Cialis, said there had been a small number of cases of NAION in people taking the drug.

This was now flagged up in the prescribing information.

In a statement, the company said it was difficult to establish a firm link as most patients taking impotency drug had other risk factors which rendered them potentially vulnerable to NAION.

Sport - Hard time for Viagra racehorses

Alan Ngai’s pair were disqualified from three races between them, but he is appealing against the stiff penalty of a five-month ban.

Ngai reached new levels of excitement when his horse, Lovely, claimed two wins in the province during June, before Southern Hope kept the momentum going with another victory.

But it was later urine samples taken from the pair - who both ran on the Flat - contained the banned substance , which is the main derivative of Viagra.

In a statement, the Macau Jockey Club said Sildenafil was “a human preparation which had no legitimate use in a racehorse”.

The concluded: “It would also have an action on the cardiovascular, nervous and reproductive systems of a racehorse and as such was a prohibited substance.”

Ngai admitted the charges and was fined a total of HK$300,000 (25,000), along with the .

His appeal against the penalty will be heard on Saturday, when he expects to have a solid each-way chance.

News - Viagra rival approved in US

The United States Government has approved the sale of a new drug expected to raise the stakes in the male impotence market.

Levitra, the first market rival to the hugely profitable Viagra, is being manufactured by the German firm, Bayer AG, and marketed by the British firm GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as an alternative oral therapy for erectile dysfunction.

Since its in 1998, sales of Pfizer’s Viagra have risen to nearly $2bn a year.

Both pills work in the same manner and doctors warn that both can have serious side effects, especially for men with heart problems.

A third pill, Cialis, is expected to reach the US market later this year.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Levitra, an orange pill compared to Viagra’s blue, based on studies showing that men were on average five times more likely to achieve an erection suitable for when taking the pill compared with those given a dummy medicine.

Researchers reported that studies of several thousand men showed that Viagra helped more than 70% improve their
erections.

As well as the warnings to men with heart conditions, the FDA said Levitra was not for patients with who had suffered a recent heart attack or stroke who have very low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure.

For otherwise healthy men, Levitra’s main side effects
were headache, flushing and a stuffy nose and sometimes dizziness.

Lawson Macartney, head of strategic management of GlaxoSmithKline’s cardiovascular, metabolic and urology drugs, said: “We know, from considerable market research, that the
market is ready for new options”.

GSK expects Levitra to be available in September.

News - Men’s hopes for Viagra ‘too high’

Men have been given unrealistic s of the benefits of Viagra, have said.

Erectile dysfunction sufferers who took the drug but found it did not work were left .

A study of 40 men by the Royal Hampshire Hospital, published in the British Medical Journal, showed most had high hopes for the treatment.

The media’s ” reporting” of Viagra was blamed for the distress caused when it failed to work.

Researchers interviewed a random sample of 40 men with an average age of 52 who had been prescribed Viagra and had attended a men’s health clinic in the year before the study.

There was a very high expectation of Viagra

Ann Tailor, Sexual Dysfunction Association

Erectile dysfunction caused serious distress to all those men who suffered from it, with marked effects on their self-esteem and well-being.

There was generally an improvement in well-being when Viagra, the generic name for which is sildenafil, was successful. But when it failed the distress was severe.

Fault

Many of the men said this was the fault of media hype.

The researchers at the Royal Hampshire Hospital’s men’s health clinic said: “The media have had a major effect on expectations of sildenafil, and in retrospect, less sensational reporting would have lowered those expectations to the patients’ benefit.”

Health professionals also needed to be aware of the extreme distress erectile dysfunction could cause, they said.

Ann Tailor, director of the Sexual Dysfunction Association, said: “There was a very high expectation of Viagra. It was portrayed as a wonder drug in the press - take this and get the best sex life.

“For many people who have taken it, it has been safe and effective, but there have been a number of men who it has not worked for.”

The reasons why it had not worked were not always understood, she said. The drug should not be taken after food or alcohol and sexual stimulation is still required for it to have the desired effect.

Therapy

Mrs Tailor added that if patients had psychological problems because of the failure of the treatment, or the erectile dysfunction itself, they should seek sexual therapy.

Prof Dinesh Bhugra, at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, said: “There is no doubt that people who invest a lot of hope in a particular kind of treatment, when it does not work, they feel much worse because it makes them stand out.

“They think, if it works for everyone else I must be much worse.”

However, the reality was that there were a number of factors in individual cases, both physical and psychological, Prof Bhugra said.

Health professionals should consider a range of treatments suitable to the patient, he said.

News - China overturns Viagra patent

Officials in China have defended their decision to overturn a patent on the anti-impotence drug, Viagra.

Viagra is made by the world’s biggest drug company, the American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.

US business groups have condemned the decision, which they say has far-reaching implications.

But some Aids activists hope it could spell good news for Chinese people with HIV/Aids.

Sources at China’s state intellectual property office said Pfizer had failed to provide enough information on exactly how the active ingredient - a substance called Sildenafil Sitrate - was manufactured.

It said several Chinese companies had filed , and the authorities had now ruled in favour of allowing them to copy the drug.

Pfizer is reported to be appealing against the decision, arguing that it was not asked for the information when the patent was granted, three years ago.

US business lobby groups have condemned China’s decision as making a mockery of its commitments under World Trade rules to protect intellectual property.

On the other hand, one Aids activist said the move was good news if it signalled a tougher Chinese line on the pharmaceuticals that might help to make foreign-patented anti-retroviral drugs available cheaply for Chinese people with HIV/Aids.

News - Viagra spam forces legal action

Drug giant Pfizer has started a legal campaign against spammers and online pharmacies pushing fake Viagra.

The campaign will try to seize domains selling fake pills and stop spammers sending messages offering the drug.

The firm began the campaign after survey results showed that many people believe Pfizer is the source of spam offering Viagra.

Alongside the legal challenge goes a project to warn people about the dangers of popping fake Viagra pills.

Health warning

Many of the junk messages sent by spammers offer Viagra or so-called generic versions of the pill that supposedly offer the same help with erectile dysfunction that the original drug was created to treat.

The name “Viagra” has become so associated with spam that any junk mailer wanting to use the word has to obfuscate it with non-alphanumeric characters to help the messages slip past spam filters.

Pfizer is now suing websites that illegally use the Viagra name to market the generic versions and to block the sales of these drugs. It is also going after spammers that send out millions of messages offering the drug.

Screen grab of Viagra spam. BBC

Scrambled spellings mean spam

In a survey 25% of men believed that Pfizer was responsible for sending the Viagra-themed spam.

Pfizer said that there was no such thing as legal generic Viagra because such a version of the drug has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

“Pfizer is taking these steps to help raise consumer awareness about the problems posed by illegitimate online ‘ and to directly address the source of these problems,” said Jeff Kindler, legal spokesman for Pfizer.

The company is working with the US Department of Justice, US Customs and Border Protection, the FBI, and the US FDA to track down and prosecute the sellers of illegal Viagra.

“It’s often difficult for consumers to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate internet ‘pharmacies,’” said Brian Lamkin, head of the FBI’s Financial Crimes Section.

“These websites are cleverly designed to defraud consumers and sell drugs that are not approved by the US FDA,” he said.

Awareness campaign

Pfizer is directly suing five organisations and that it claims are infringing its trademarks, engaging in unfair and deceptive practices in selling non-approved Viagra or illegal generic versions of it.

It is also attempting to seize 24 websites that it claims are trading illegally on the Viagra name and are trying to sell illegal versions of the drug.

As well as the lawsuits, Pfizer is rolling out a public awareness campaign to warn consumers about the health dangers of taking illegal Viagra pills.

Pfizer said Viagra should only be taken after consultation with a physician as the condition it was created to treat has many causes and taking the drug could exacerbate these other health problems.

News - Bogus ‘Viagra’ doctor is jailed

A bogus doctor who ran one of Europe’s biggest Viagra factories has been jailed.

Allen Valentine’s business in Wembley, with a warehouse in Watford, could produce 500,000 tablets a day.

Harrow Crown Court heard on Friday the operation was “one of the largest illegal drug and pharmaceutical production operations in Europe”.

Valentine, 44, from Harrow, who admitted supplying class C drugs, was jailed for five-and-a-half years.

The court heard Valentine’s “” international operation, which also churned out steroids and cartons of potentially dangerous pills, risked the health of the public and is believed to have made him millions.

Viagra and diazepam are no longer the subject of jokes. They are for many people the to restore normality to the value of living.

Judge Barrington Black

Just 24 hours before he was arrested, the father-of-two offered 1.25m cash for a palatial mansion in one of the country’s most sought-after areas and arranged delivery of a new 26,500 Jeep Cherokee.

Valentine, of Kynaston Wood, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply Class C drugs between January 1, 2001 and April 21 this year, as well as two similar charges involving contraventions of the Trade Marks Act and
Medicines Act.

Passing sentence Judge Barrington Black told the drugs producer, a former sales rep for Viagra maker Pfizer, that he had traded on people’s need for a “normal life”.

‘Serious matter’

He said “considerable” sums were invested by pharmaceutical companies to develop products in a “controlled and safe” way.

“It is a serious matter when the public are hoodwinked to the extent that such products, although akin to the correct ones, are being produced in an environment without the necessary precautions… in a makeshift and potentially dangerous manner.

“Viagra and diazepam are no longer the subject of jokes. They are for many people the constituents to restore normality to the value of living.”

Also imprisoned was Davin Pattni, 27, of Beverley Gardens, Stanmore, Middlesex, who got three years after pleading guilty to two of the conspiracy counts.

A third defendant, Paul Austin, 40, of Hampden Road, Harrow - regarded by police as a low level “gopher” - received an 18-month sentence suspended for two years for one of the conspiracy charges he had admitted.
